"Every December, Francis Smith, co-owner of Smith's Restaurant in North Creek, bakes ethnic German cookies to pass around to friends.

On Friday, Smith and his sister, Joanne Smith, brought a heaping plate of the cookies to the North Creek train station as a gift for Gov. George Pataki, who was in town to announce $7 million in state funding for the Gore Mountain Ski Center, and another $3 million to establish rail service between Saratoga Springs and North Creek.

Joanne Smith said the couple wanted to thank Pataki, who leaves office in about two weeks, for his support for the region.

Pataki had an aide pass around the plate among the few dozen people who attended the press conference.

"We're going to open them up, and everybody can have a cookie as a memory of what happened here, and we'll all eat them together," he said."
